How to Read Your Birth Chart (Kundali) — Step by Step
A Kundali (also spelled Kundli or Janam Patri) is your Vedic birth chart — a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. Here's how to read one step by step.
Step 1: Identify Your Lagna (Ascendant)
The Lagna is the most important point in your chart. It's the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the time of your birth. The Lagna determines the entire house structure of your chart — which sign falls in which house.
For example, if your Lagna is Aries (Mesha), then Aries occupies your 1st house, Taurus your 2nd, Gemini your 3rd, and so on.
Step 2: Locate the Moon Sign
Your Moon sign (Rashi) is where the Moon was placed at birth. In Vedic astrology, the Moon sign is used more than the Sun sign for predictions, especially for the Dasha system and transit analysis.
Step 3: Note Planetary Placements
Look at where each of the 9 Vedic planets is placed:
- Sun (Surya): Soul, father, authority, government
- Moon (Chandra): Mind, mother, emotions, public
- Mars (Mangal): Energy, courage, property, siblings
- Mercury (Budh): Intelligence, communication, business
- Jupiter (Guru): Wisdom, expansion, children, fortune
- Venus (Shukra): Love, luxury, art, marriage
- Saturn (Shani): Discipline, karma, longevity, delays
- Rahu: Obsession, foreign, unconventional, technology
- Ketu: Spirituality, detachment, past lives, moksha
Step 4: Check Planetary Dignity
A planet's strength depends on where it's placed:
- Exalted (Uchcha): At its strongest sign — gives excellent results
- Own Sign (Swakshetra): In the sign it rules — comfortable and strong
- Friendly Sign: Supported by the sign lord — decent results
- Debilitated (Neecha): At its weakest sign — may give challenges
Step 5: Understand the Dasha Timeline
The Vimshottari Dasha system divides your life into planetary periods. Each major period (Mahadasha) lasts a specific number of years and is ruled by one planet. During that period, the themes of that planet dominate your life.
