Αστρολογία Τζαϊμίνι: Κάρακα, Αρούντα Λάγκνα & Τσάρα Ντάσα
Jaimini Sutras, attributed to the sage Jaimini (a disciple of Vyasa), present a sophisticated astrological system that runs parallel to — and complements — the more widely known Parashara system. While Parashara's Brihat Hora Shastra forms the mainstream of Vedic astrology, Jaimini's system introduces unique concepts that provide insights unavailable through Parashara alone.
Chara Karakas: Variable Significators
The most revolutionary concept in Jaimini astrology is the Chara Karaka system. In Parashara, planetary significators are fixed — Jupiter always represents children, Venus always represents marriage. In Jaimini, significators are determined by the degree of each planet in your specific chart.
The 7/8 Chara Karakas
Planets are ranked by their degree (0°–30°) in any sign. The highest degree planet gets the most important role:
| Rank | Karaka | Signification |
|---|---|---|
| Highest degree | Atmakaraka (AK) | Soul, self, core purpose of this life |
| 2nd highest | Amatyakaraka (AmK) | Career, profession, advisors |
| 3rd highest | Bhratrikaraka (BK) | Siblings, courage, initiatives |
| 4th highest | Matrikaraka (MK) | Mother, property, emotions |
| 5th highest | Putrakaraka (PK) | Children, creativity, intelligence |
| 6th highest | Gnatikaraka (GK) | Rivals, diseases, obstacles |
| 7th highest | Darakaraka (DK) | Spouse, partnerships |
Why This Matters
Suppose in your chart, Saturn is at the highest degree (Atmakaraka). This means your soul's purpose in this life involves Saturnian themes — discipline, service, endurance, karmic debts. If Mars is your Darakaraka (spouse significator), your partner will have Martian qualities — assertive, energetic, possibly in defense/engineering/sports.
This is far more personalized than Parashara's fixed significators, because it varies from chart to chart.
Karakamsha: The Soul's Desire
The Karakamsha is the Navamsha sign of the Atmakaraka. It reveals the soul's deepest desires and the life direction:
- Karakamsha in Aries/Scorpio: Soul drawn to leadership, martial arts, engineering
- Karakamsha in Taurus/Libra: Soul drawn to art, luxury, relationships, beauty
- Karakamsha in Gemini/Virgo: Soul drawn to learning, communication, analysis
- Karakamsha in Cancer: Soul drawn to nurturing, home, emotional security
- Karakamsha in Leo: Soul drawn to authority, politics, performance
- Karakamsha in Sagittarius/Pisces: Soul drawn to wisdom, spirituality, teaching
- Karakamsha in Capricorn/Aquarius: Soul drawn to structure, service, reform
Arudha Lagna: Your Public Image
Arudha Lagna (AL) is perhaps Jaimini's most practical contribution. While the regular Lagna shows who you are, the Arudha Lagna shows how the world sees you — your reputation, social status, and material manifestation.
How to Calculate Arudha Lagna
- Find the lord of the 1st house
- Count the number of signs from the 1st house to its lord
- Count the same number of signs from the lord
- The resulting sign is the Arudha Lagna
Exception: If the Arudha falls in the 1st or 7th house from Lagna, it moves to the 10th or 4th house respectively.
Interpreting the Arudha Lagna
- Benefics in/aspecting AL: Good public image, social respect, material prosperity
- Malefics in/aspecting AL: Public controversies, obstacles to material growth
- AL lord strong: Sustained success and reputation
- AL in kendras from Lagna: Material success aligns with true self
Jaimini Aspects (Rashi Drishti)
Jaimini aspects are fundamentally different from Parashara aspects:
- Sign-based, not planet-based: All planets in a sign aspect the same target signs
- Dual-sign rule:
- Moveable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) aspect Fixed signs except the one adjacent
- Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) aspect Moveable signs except the one adjacent
- Dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) aspect each other
Chara Dasha: Sign-Based Timing
While Parashara's Vimshottari Dasha uses planets as period lords, Jaimini's Chara Dasha uses signs. The period and sub-period of each sign reveal which life areas become activated.
- Dasha periods are calculated based on the sign's lord and its distance from a reference point
- Each sign's dasha activates the houses and planets within that sign
- Events tend to manifest when the Chara Dasha sign contains or aspects key karakas (AK, DK, PK, etc.)
Practical Integration: Using Both Systems
The most powerful chart reading uses Parashara and Jaimini together:
- Personality & karma: Parashara (Lagna, Moon sign, Yogas)
- Soul purpose: Jaimini (Atmakaraka, Karakamsha)
- Career direction: Jaimini (Amatyakaraka, Arudha of 10th house)
- Marriage timing: Parashara Dasha + Jaimini Chara Dasha (when DK is activated)
- Public success: Jaimini (Arudha Lagna analysis)
