Ashtakavarga: Το Πιο Ακριβές Σύστημα Πρόβλεψης Διελεύσεων

Μάθημα 9 Εμβάθυνση

Ashtakavarga (literally "eight divisions of strength") is one of the most mathematically precise prediction systems in Vedic astrology. While most transit prediction methods rely on qualitative rules — "Jupiter transiting the 5th house is good for children" — Ashtakavarga assigns actual numerical scores that tell you exactly how favorable or unfavorable a transit will be for you personally.

Why Ashtakavarga Matters

Generic transit predictions treat all individuals the same: "Saturn is in Pisces, so all Aries Moons will face challenges." But this ignores a crucial reality — the same transit can be excellent for one person and terrible for another, depending on their birth chart. Ashtakavarga solves this by computing personalized transit scores based on your unique planetary positions.

The Mathematics Behind It

The system works through a systematic scoring process:

Step 1: Individual Planet Charts (Bhinnashtakavarga)

For each of the 7 visible planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn), a separate chart is created. Each chart has 12 cells (one per sign), and each cell receives a score from 0 to 8.

The scoring rule is elegant: for each planet, Parashara defined specific positions relative to 7 other reference points (the other 6 planets, plus the Ascendant) where the planet gives benefic results. If the condition is met, a bindu (benefic point) is assigned.

PlanetReference PointsMax Score Per Sign
SunSun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Lagna8
MoonSun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Lagna8
MarsSun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Lagna8
MercurySun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Lagna8
JupiterSun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Lagna8
VenusSun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Lagna8
SaturnSun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Lagna8

Step 2: Combined Chart (Sarvashtakavarga)

The Sarvashtakavarga sums all 7 individual charts. Each sign now has a score from 0 to 56 (7 planets × 8 max points). The total across all 12 signs is always 337 points.

SAV Score RangeInterpretation
30–56Highly favorable — planets transiting this sign bring strong positive results
28–29Average — mixed results, depends on specific planet
25–27Below average — challenges likely during transits through this sign
0–24Weak — most transits through this sign bring difficulties

How to Use Ashtakavarga for Transit Predictions

Rule 1: Check the Transit Sign's BAV Score

When a planet transits a sign, check its Bhinnashtakavarga (BAV) score for that sign. If the score is:

  • 5–8 bindus: The transit will be highly favorable
  • 4 bindus: Average/mixed results
  • 0–3 bindus: The transit may bring challenges

Rule 2: Saturn's Transit Through Signs

Saturn's transit (Sade Sati, Dhaiya, etc.) is feared universally. But Ashtakavarga reveals that Saturn's transit through a sign with 4+ bindus in Saturn's BAV is actually manageable or even positive. Only signs with 0–2 bindus bring the severe effects traditionally described.

Rule 3: Jupiter's Transit for Opportunities

Jupiter's 12-year cycle brings opportunities when transiting signs with high BAV scores. A Jupiter transit through a sign with 5+ bindus in Jupiter's BAV is an excellent time for education, career growth, marriage, or spiritual pursuits.

Rule 4: Kaksha-Based Timing

Each sign is further divided into 8 kakshas (subdivisions), each ruled by a different planet. As a transiting planet moves through a sign, results fluctuate based on which kaksha it occupies. If the kaksha lord contributed a bindu, the sub-period is favorable; otherwise, it's challenging.

Practical Example

Consider someone with Saturn's BAV showing 5 bindus in Pisces and 1 bindu in Aries:

  • Saturn in Pisces (2023–2026): Despite general Sade Sati fears, this transit is actually favorable for this person — Saturn has strong support in Pisces in their chart.
  • Saturn in Aries (2026–2029): This transit will be genuinely challenging — only 1 bindu means Saturn's energy is almost entirely malefic here.

Ashtakavarga and Longevity

Classical texts also use Ashtakavarga for longevity estimation:

  • If the 8th house (from Lagna) has a high SAV score, the native generally has good vitality
  • The Ayurdaya method uses Ashtakavarga scores to calculate expected lifespan ranges
  • Transits of malefics through signs with very low SAV scores during critical dasha periods require extra caution

Common Misconceptions

  • "High SAV = always good" — Not exactly. High SAV means favorable transit results, but the house the sign falls in still matters. High SAV in the 6th house may mean "powerful enemies" rather than good fortune.
  • "Ashtakavarga replaces all other methods" — It supplements dasha analysis and divisional charts, it doesn't replace them. The best predictions combine Ashtakavarga with Vimshottari Dasha and transit aspects.
