How the Dasha System Works
The system is based on the Moon's Nakshatra (lunar mansion) at the time of birth. Each of the 27 Nakshatras is ruled by one of the 9 Vedic planets, and this determines which Mahadasha you're born into.

Sub-Periods (Antardashas)
Each Mahadasha is subdivided into 9 sub-periods (Antardashas), one for each planet. For example, during Jupiter Mahadasha, you'll experience Jupiter-Jupiter, Jupiter-Saturn, Jupiter-Mercury, etc. The sub-period planet modifies the main period's themes.
